Lobbying Deadline & Call for Stories

by admin on April 1, 2010

Hello New York! We hope you are basking in the sunshine of this early spring! A reminder for you:

If you want to speak to your legislator on Lobby Day Friday, April 2 is your last chance to register!

Everyone is welcome to come to Albany to participate in the rally, but we need to plan ahead of time in order to make appointments with legislators. If you are thinking about talking to your legislator but are nervous, please don't be afraid to register!  You will be receiving a packet with a lobbying 101 guide and you will be matched up with midwives and midwifery students. Regardless of whether you lobby or not we look forward to rallying with you and hundreds of  families who support New York State midwives. Bring your friends and family!

Call for Stories

We need stories from across the state that exemplify the lack of access to midwives that currently plagues New York. It does not have to be long or detailed.  Just your name, town and a short description of any lack of access you have experienced.  Email all examples to hillary@freeourmidwives.org as soon as possible! Here is a great example of an email we received:
If you need any "I traveled for midwifery care" stories, I drove to Trumansburg from Endicott for appointments (1-1/2 hrs.) so I could have midwifery care in the setting of my choice.  🙂

I paid out of pocket for an out-of-network midwife so that I could have a midwife that was not an hour away from my home. My midwife was about thirty minutes away and she came to ME toward the end of my pregnancy. My appointments were as long as they needed to be, and I got excellent prenatal education, something that is seriously lacking under the current medical model… and I should know because im a labor and delivery nurse!
