MMA spokespeople needed!

by admin on June 10, 2010

We've learned that many legislators have misunderstandings about the MMA!  To get the bill passed this session, we need your help!  We need *one* person from every legislative district to a be spokesperson the MMA. Here's the job: - read a fact sheet with key messages on the bill - contact your legislator and offer to talk with them about the legislation - be available for a phone call with your legislator - in your call, stick to the key messages - report back via e-mail to Free Our Midwives on your call - be prepared to make other calls as needed Up for the job?  Check this list - if your legislator(s) are listed, we still need a spokesperson in your area.  Contact Jeanette with your name and your legislator's name.  We'll get back to you with a fact sheet, contact info, and a timeframe for calling. Thanks for stepping up during this critical time for midwifery care in New York State.

Two Steps Closer!

by admin on June 9, 2010

Congratulations! Stay Tuned for More Action.

In the past two days the MMA has been voted out of both the Assembly and Senate Higher Education Committees. Congratulations! This is a HUGE accomplishment towards our goal of passing this important legislation that will give New York State women and families access to the safe, excellent midwifery care we need. The journey is not over.  We are now waiting for the legislation to get called to the Senate and Assembly floors to get voted on by both full chambers. Right now it is time to relax, rejuvenate and celebrate the outcomes of our hard work and our swift and effective actions.  The consumer push was an integral part of this legislation's movement and it was nothing short of a miracle.  We have you to thank for it! Please stay tuned for the next action steps.  Together we WILL pass this legislation! You can check in here and/or stay in touch via our facebook page. Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!

Key vote happening today!

by admin on June 8, 2010

Over the next few weeks, there will be a few critical moments to act to ensure midwifery care - here’s the MOST IMPORTANT action you could take so far! A critical committee vote today at 11:30 am means we must *flood* ALL the Assembly Higher Ed committee members with calls/faxes/e-mails *nonstop* ASAP.  Contact *all* the committee members, not just your own legislators. Please send faxes (best!) or e-mails (great!) and follow up with a phone call  – and watch here for news! complete contact info for assembly higher ed committee the short call list (only committee members not identified as supporters) call script Can only make one call today?  Make it Assemblywoman Glick, who chairs the committee. Key messages: - you support the Midwifery Modernization Act (S5007/A8117) - you want the Higher Ed committee to report it out of committee so that it can be voted on by the entire assembly sample letter here Thanks for taking action to support midwives!  This bill is only moving thanks to all of the hard work of consumers around the state like you!
